Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday signed a law effectively invalidating several Russian-Ukrainian agreements on Russia’s Black Sea Fleet in Ukraine, the Kremlin said on its website.

The law invalidates bilateral agreements on the parameters of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, as well as the status of the fleet in Ukraine that was signed in 1997 in Kiev.

An intergovernmental agreement has also been voided on bilateral financing for the Russian Black Sea Fleet and its base in Ukraine that was signed on May 28, 1997, in Kiev.

Meanwhile, European Commission President Jose Borroso earlier said the European Union is not yet prepared to offer Ukraine the perspective of membership, although he noted that the EU has always said it leaves the door open for membership and that possibility will remain open in the future.
