China has dispatched two aircrafts carrying humanitarian aid items that arrived in Erbil, the capital city of Iraqi Kurdish region on Tuesday.

Chinese Consul General in Erbil, Tan Banglin handed over the relief material worth about 30 million yuan to Iraqi Kurdish officials after a handover ceremony at the airport.

The Chinese diplomat in Erbil said Beijing “deeply sympathizes with the Iraqi refugees and displaced people affected by the invasion of the Islamic State”.

He said that the humanitarian aid assistance is part of the country’s support to the counter-terrorism efforts of Iraq, including the Kurdish region.

Conflict and insecurity in Iraq have displaced more than 2.1 million people across the country and left 5.2 million in need of aid – of whom 2.2 million are in areas under the control of ISIL, says the UN.

Thahir Osman, vice governor of Erbil province said on Tuesday the Iraqi Kurdish region had accepted 1.6 million Iraqi displaced people and Syrian refugees.

“China’s assistance is very valuable and timely at this difficult time,” said the Iraqi official.

Four months after US President Barack Obama launched air strikes against ISIL in Iraq, Islamic State has still managed to consolidate control of Iraq’s largest province Anbar.

Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) has declared a “caliphate” on territory it has captured in both Iraq and Syria.

China’s BRICS partner India has had no contact with 39 men missing in Iraq since June, but believes them to be alive, the Indian Foreign Minister said last month.

Meanwhile, Iran is supporting Iraqi government forces and Shi’ite militia against the militants, who have seized large swaths of Iraqi and Syrian territory.
