Russian and American intelligence officials are looking to coordinate more closely in the near future, according to Russia’s interior minister.

At a meeting with the US secretary of homeland security Giorgio Napolitano, Russia’s interior minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev has discussed the possibility of establishing joint working groups with the US.

The joint working groups will counter “new international challenges and threats,” including cyber-crime, sexual exploitation of minors and smuggling, Kolokoltsev said at the end of his week-long visit to US.

“As well as our US colleagues, we see a lot of areas of common interest in cooperation between the Interior Ministry and the FBI,” Kolokoltsev said.

Kolokoltsev has also discussed strengthening US-Russian cooperation in the field of law enforcement, information security, the fight against international drug-related crimes, extremism and terrorism.

Kolokoltsev stressed that both US and Russia should consolidate the efforts in these directions on the platform of the United Nations Organization.
