Russia’s Mariinsky Theatre carried out a live broadcast of Tchaikovsky’s legendary ballet Swan Lake on Thursday night in a 3D feed to over 1,500 theatres in 50 countries around the world.

The performance, part of the St. Petersburg White Nights Festival, is directed by Ross MacGibbon and Avatar director James Cameron is also part of the project.

The 3D broadcast features scenes shot at St. Petersburg’s Winter Palace before moving to the action onstage.

Meanwhile, locals wishing to catch the 3D action will be able to enjoy the unique experience in Mariinsky-2, the recently opened 21st-century extension to the original theatre.

The US-based Cameron Pace Group, the company of James Cameron and Vince Pace, is producing the 3D Mariinsky event using the same Oscar-winning technology used in ‘Avatar.’
