The death toll from the blistering Indian heat wave rose to 2,207 on Saturday with 202 more deaths being reported since Friday from southern states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana as well as the eastern state of Orissa, said officials.

The heatwave has taken a severe toll on India’s poorest and those who have to work outdoors.

Nagpur city in the central state of Maharashtra recorded the highest temperature of 47.1 degrees Celsius on Saturday, said Indian meteorological officials.

Andhra Pradesh reported 146 more deaths Saturday, raising the toll to 1,636, while in Telangana, the toll due to the heat wave rose to 541 with 52 more deaths being reported during the last 24 hours, the Press Trust of India quoted officials as saying.

The toll in Orissa also rose to 21 from 17 since Friday. Seven deaths have so far been reported from Gujarat and two from Delhi.

India’s farmers are now impatient for the arrival of the monsoon, which irrigates 60 per cent of India’s fields.
