Thousands of demonstrators marched in leading Brazilian cities on Sunday demanding the resignation of President Dilma Rousseff over corruption charges against her party members. Protestors were also angry about austerity measures initiated by the government to revive growth and protect investment ratings.

A corruption scandal at Brazil’s state oil giant Petrobras, has implicated politicians in Rousseff’s party, although not the President herself.

275,000 demonstrators marched in Sao Paulo, say the state’s military police officials.

Brazil’s state oil giant Petrobras estimates it paid out some 6 billion reals ($2 billion) in illegal “commissions” as part of a corruption scheme that operated for years.

Earlier last month, labour unions and activists came out on the streets in a show of strength for Rousseff, saying that calling for her impeachment without legal basis is nothing more than a coup.
