The Russian Foreign Ministry on Saturday reported that its UN envoy met with new US ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley just a day after she condemned Moscow for its support of rebels in eastern Ukraine.

A spokesperson for the Russian Mission to the UN said that Haley visited Vitaly Churkin at his residence.

“Both sides expressed the intention to cooperate tightly within the United Nations in accordance with their respective capitals’ intentions,” spokesman Fyodor Strzhizhovsky told Russian news agency TASS.

On Friday during a UN Security Council meeting over renewed fighting in eastern Ukraine, Haley said that Washington condemned Russia’s “aggressive actions” there.

“We do want to better our relations with Russia, however the dire situation in eastern Ukraine is one that demands clear and strong condemnation of Russian actions,” Haley said. “This escalation of violence must stop.”

US media on Friday said that Haley’s comments appeare to contrast with expected moves by US President Donald Trump to improve ties with Russia amid speculation of a possible easing of punitive sanctions against Moscow.

But Churkin told TASS following Friday’s UNSC meeting that Haley appeared to be different from her predecessor sounding friendlier.
