Over 17 people were killed in a warehouse fire in south China’s Guangdong Province, China’s state agency Xinhua quoted local officials as saying on Friday.

The fire broke out at about 1:51 p.m. on Thursday in a warehouse on the fourth floor of a small merchandise wholesale market in Huidong County. A local government statement has said the fire has been put out and the situation was under control after more than six hours.

The enforcement of China’s work-safety measures has lagged behind the growth of its economy, now the world’s second-largest.

In August last year, an explosion at a wheel-polishing plant in Jiangsu province of China killed 75 and left 185 injured.
