Russia’s Winter Olympics closed Sunday on the Black Sea coast with a high octane show in a dazzling closing ceremony attended by President Vladimir Putin and thousands of spectators at the Fisht Olympic Stadium.

Russia achieved its best ever result in Sochi, winning 33 medals in total, including 13 gold.

Putin and International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach met shortly before the closing ceremony to congratulate one another on what have been widely hailed as successful Games.

“We saw excellent Games and what counts most is the opinions of the athletes and they were enormously satisfied. You have to ask all those who criticised whether they change their opinions now,” said Bach referring to sceptics who doubted whether Russia could pull off hosting such an event.

Russian President Putin had hoped the successful hosting of the games would dispel fears of militant attacks and a row over gay rights.

Around 37,000 security personnel were on high alert over threats to attack the Games even as Islamist militant from the North Caucasus threatening to attack Russia’s first Winter Olympics.

Leaders from China and Japan had attended the opening ceremony of the Sochi Games in a boost to Putin.
