Rio de Janeiro, Brazil’s second largest city, plans to launch an electric-vehicle sharing service with input from Chinese automaker BYD, local media reported on Tuesday.

BYD is one of five firms that together make up PPP Radar, the consortium that has won the bid to develop the program, according to Brazilian daily O Estado de Sao Paulo.

BYD, together with DirijaJa, IDOM, PricewaterhouseCoopers and Albino Advogados Associados will present their project within the next six months. China is now one of the largest electric car markets in the world.

“The city of Rio de Janeiro should have a fleet of electric vehicles as of next year … for carsharing,” the report said, adding that the program will offer some 300 cars initially.

Carsharing, which operates in cities worldwide, allows drivers to rent a vehicle by the hour, a convenience for those who don’t need a car full time or want to try a different model from the one they have.

China’s BYD, which unveiled the world’s first battery-powered coach in January, has other projects under way in Brazil.

In July, the company will launch a battery plant for electric vehicles in Campinas, Sao Paulo state, said the daily. The plant will also produce solar panels and assemble buses.

BYD, a manufacturer of electric cars and batteries, plans to invest $400 million in Brazil by 2018.

Great idea! The e6 model is a very nice unit with many features and great style! With roughly 250 miles per charge on even ground, this truly is very helpful concerning the fuel costs in this country! The government has indicated the mixture of 2% of alcohol in the gasoline this year plus the rise on price has made many people downcasted…This month the impeachment of the presidente is set for the 15th and people are expecting vandalism and lots of incidentes due to the extremely low factory output and lower GDP set at 0.13 for the 2015. The benefits of the workers were lowered and as long as the government makes a novel of this period, very typical of this government, then what the economy can expect is simply reliance on the Chinese Market to bail us out of this mire of corruption! The investigations of the involvement of the existing president with the most scandalous period of Brazil´s history is over because they decided to file away the petition for the bringing to justice the wrongdoings of the president!!! Disgusting situation unfortunately! This new factory should bring a handful of Jobs save the conditions of the road considering many parts of this country is very hilly and dangerous. Let´s hope the new government can clean up this political messy situation and start working for the people once again!
