At least 27 people have been killed and 109 injured in what Chinese authorities say was a premeditated terrorist attack at the Kunming train station in the southwestern Yunnan Province.

Police have not yet identified the attackers who were said to have used knives to kill evening commuters.

But they and local hospital staff said the death toll could rise.

Yang Haifei, one of the commuters, told Xinhua News Agency that he was attacked as he was waiting in line to buy his ticket around 9pm on Saturday; he sustained injuries to his chest and back.

“I saw a person come straight at me with a long knife and I ran away with everyone,” he said.

Stabbings have been previously reported in China but are often attributed to a single attacker and have never resulted in so many casualties.
